Hey folks!
This post will help you with the mistakes you might be making as an installer or having workers to install for you.
In our previous post of our series about how to escalate your shop from low to high production even during inflation, we’ve talked about 9 easy tips to find customers using Instagram. If you haven’t read it yet, we recommend you read it and come back to this one later on. You’ll find relevant content there”

To move on with our 2nd post on this series, whether you’re a homeowner planning to get new countertops or a fellow installer, we’ll talk about the most common mistakes we see in countertop installation. Here’s a rundown of those slip-ups, what can go wrong, and how we make things right.
This post is extremely relevant if:
- You have to send workers many times to the same place to correct previous mistakes
- You are losing money because of mistakes
- Your shop is losing credibility
- Your customer service isn’t being able to handle complaints about your previous works
We’ve taken the data in this post both from discussion forums and feedback from installers and shop owners.
1. Bad Measurements
- Mistake: Not measuring correctly.
- Consequence: The countertop won’t fit properly. You could end up with gaps, awkward overhangs, or, worst case, we might need to reorder the whole thing.
- How We Fix It: We double-check all measurements before placing the order. For tricky layouts, we use templates to get every curve and corner just right. If a mistake does happen, we trim the excess or fill the gaps, making it blend in seamlessly.
2. Not Enough Support
- Mistake: Skimping on support for heavy materials like granite or quartz.
- Consequence: Without proper support, the countertop can sag, crack, or even collapse over time, causing damage and potential injury.
- How We Fix It: We add brackets, plywood sub-tops, or whatever’s needed to hold up those heavy slabs, especially on overhangs. If damage has already occurred, we reinforce the area and might bring in a structural expert to make sure it’s rock solid.
3. Ugly Seams
- Mistake: Creating visible, uneven, or poorly placed seams.
- Consequence: Bad seams not only look awful, but they can also trap dirt and moisture, leading to stains or bacteria growth.
- How We Fix It: We aim to place seams where they’re less noticeable and ensure they align perfectly. Using color-matched epoxy helps make them nearly invisible. If a seam needs reworking, we can sand and refinish the area to smooth things out.
4. Skipping the Leveling
- Mistake: Not leveling the countertop before installation.
- Consequence: An unlevel countertop can lead to water pooling, uneven wear, and potential cracks down the line.
- How We Fix It: We use shims or adjust the cabinet feet until everything is perfectly level. We check from all angles before securing it. If necessary, we’ll pull the countertop off, level the base cabinets, and re-install.
5. Weak Adhesion
- Mistake: Using the wrong adhesive or not allowing it to cure properly.
- Consequence: Weak adhesion can cause the countertop to loosen over time or even detach from the cabinets.
- How We Fix It: We reapply the correct adhesive and make sure it cures properly. If the countertop is already loose, we carefully lift it, clean the surfaces, and re-secure it with fresh adhesive, following the manufacturer’s guidelines.
6. Poor Sealing
- Mistake: Not sealing porous countertops like granite or marble properly.
- Consequence: Porous materials can soak up liquids, leading to stains, bacteria growth, and material degradation.
- How We Fix It: If the sealing wasn’t done right, we thoroughly clean the surface and apply a high-quality sealant. For existing stains, we use a poultice to lift them out before resealing. Regular maintenance and resealing prevent future issues.
If you work with multiple materials, choosing the right type to use can be helpful. If you need more tips about it, check out this post. And if you work with commercial projects, here are some extra tips about ideas, materials, and designs for those spaces.
7. Rushing the Job
- Mistake: Trying to complete the installation too quickly, skipping important steps.
- Consequence: Rushed jobs lead to misaligned countertops, poor sealing, and lack of proper support.
- How We Fix It: We slow down and take the time to do it right. If something was rushed, we go back and fix it, whether that means leveling, resealing, or adding support. Clear communication with the client about any delays is key to ensuring a quality finish.
